General Podiatry Treatments

Hard Skin /Corns /Callus

Hard skin, corns and callus build up over high pressure areas on the foot. They can be caused by your footwear and/or your foot anatomy. Treatment includes removal of the hard skin/corn/callus using skilled scalpel work. Advice will be given during the appointment to improve the condition of your feet and help prevent the re-occurrence of the problem.

Ingrown Toe Nails

An ingrown toe nail is one that pierces the skin surrounding the nail. It can be extremely painful. In more severe cases, it can cause pus and bleeding requiring antibiotics. The podiatrist will remove the part of the nail which has pierced the skin and give advice with regard to nail cutting, footwear and future care/ treatment.

Thickened/Fungal Nails

Thickened fungal nails can be thinned down to improve their appearance and comfort. Advice regarding treatment will be given during the appointment.

Verrucae

Verrucae are warts which usually develop on the sole of the foot. Most will resolve themselves within 18months to 2 years. Others, particularly those on weight-bearing areas can be painful often due to the buildup of hard skin over the surface.

Ear Wax Removal using Microsuction

Ear wax is necessary for healthy ears and hearing, and it usually falls out on its own. However, if it does not fall out, it can buildup and block your ear canal.

Symptoms of ear wax buildup include:
· Hearing loss
· Earache or a feeling that your ears are blocked
· Ringing or buzzing in your ears
· Vertigo (feeling dizzy or sick)

If your symptoms have not cleared after 5 days, the earwax may need to be removed by Micro-suction.
We use the latest TympaHealth equipment and have the support of Audiologists and ENT specialists via the Tympa Cloud System.

Specialist Treatments

Biomechanical Assessment

This involves an assessment of foot and lower limb and how it functions. Depending on the findings you may be prescribed stretching/strengthening exercises and/or an insole/orthotic device.

Nail Surgery

Nail surgery is a permanent solution to ingrowing toenails and other painful nail conditions. It involves the removal of part (partial) or all (total) of the problematic nail. The procedure is carried out under a local anaesthetic. This procedure should take approximately an hour, following which you will be advised to rest with your feet up for the day. It is not usually necessary to take time off work but this will depend on your occupation.

FAQs

What can I expect at my first podiatry appointment?

At your first podiatry appointment, we will: Take a detailed history of your problem. Take your medical history. Ask you about your lifestyle/ personal circumstances. Examine your feet and legs to diagnose your problem. Examine your shoe style and fit. Discuss a treatment plan with you and this could include ongoing general foot care, a referral to your GP or education and advice

Do women have more foot problems than men?

Women have about 4 times as many foot ailments than men and this is mainly caused by wearing high heels. You can help your feet by limiting the time you wear shoes with heels over 5cm and alternate these shoes with good quality trainers.

How should toenails be trimmed?

Toenails should be trimmed straight across. They should be just slightly longer than the tips of your toes. Cutting nails at the corners or edges can cause ingrown toenails.

What are Orthotics?

Orthotics are custom-made shoe inserts that are designed to prevent abnormal foot motion. They help your foot muscles and tendons to perform more efficiently and can be used to treat flat feet, high arches, heel pain and bunions. They can also stop callus from forming.

How many bones are in my feet?

There are 52 bones in your feet, making up around a quarter of the bones in your body. Your feet contain 66 joints, 214 ligaments and 38 muscles.
